...serenity in motion

It is what it is, and it ain't about us.

It is what it is, and it ain’t about us.

I was talking with an artist recently about an upcoming show.  We were looking at the temps and conditions and she said, “I feel like we are being punished.”  It does feel like we as a specie are getting punished but, it isn’t really about us.  Many different creatures are taking a beating right now and some have recently gone extinct.  We need to focus on the fact that as a single person, we didn’t do anything wrong.

Many people will tell you it’s about our dependence on fossil fuel, plastics, trash…… but we are just trying to do the best we can.  We are living our lives and trying to make the best of what we are dealt and it is the hand that is in front of us.  We aren’t being singled out.  Could we do better as a specie on the planet? Probably.  Do we rely on too much fossil fuel? I would say definitely.  I will say we are moving forward as a populace to make better choices and smarter people than me are working on the problems.

What do I do as a member of the world?  Try to be patient and kind.  Let’s look at the world around us and look for places we can make it better.  Check on a neighbor, loan/give a fan to someone.  Pay for someone’s coffee.  Smile at a stranger.  Just yesterday, I had a strange experience.  I was holding a parking spot for my husband in my home town.  We were picking up something.  While I was standing there, people kept stopping for me.  I thought they wanted my space but they were giving me the chance to cross the street.  I thanked several but it struck me as amazingly kind of all of them.  They were watching out for me, a stranger.

We have been dealing with COVID and now we have extreme heat, flooding and the ramifications of all of it.  Let’s try to do simple fixes to make the world around us better.  It won’t cost us anything to do so.  It might make the world around you a better place.  Yesterday was a very nice day for me.
